Choosing a Wood Finish for Your Home

Oak or walnut. Natural or dark. It’s a bigger decision than it feels like at the time, because unlike paint, you’re choosing a material that will visibly age and interact with light in your specific rooms for years.

**European oak** is the most forgiving choice for most homes. Its pale, warm tone reflects light well, which matters more than people expect in rooms that don’t get much direct sun. It also has enough visible grain character to feel like real wood without dominating a room the way darker species can.

**American black walnut** reads as deliberately premium — a deeper, chocolate-brown tone that photographs beautifully but absorbs more light than oak. It works best in rooms that already get good natural light, or as an accent piece (a dining table, a console) rather than throughout a whole room.

**Ash** sits between the two: lighter than walnut, with a straighter, more uniform grain than oak. It’s a good choice if you want the warmth of a light wood without oak’s more prominent grain pattern.

Our general advice: match new pieces to what’s already anchoring the room (existing flooring is usually the biggest factor), not to what’s trending. Wood tones that were chosen to complement a specific room tend to still look right in ten years; ones chosen to match a moment usually don’t.
